GOOD READS For any oenophile, these memoirs offer a view into winemaking that can enhance appreciation not only for the authors’ own wines, but for wine itself. Illustration: Francesco ZorziMAKING WINE and writing books demand quite different talents, and yet in three new memoirs, veteran wine producers establish themselves as authors of distinction. As varied as the winemakers who wrote them and the wines they make, these books all offer fascinating glimpses into winemaking as a business and a way of life. They’re gifts oenophiles can savor well beyond the holiday season. ‘From Bordeaux to the Stars: The Reawakening of a Wine Legend’ by Jean-Michel Cazes (Academie du Vin Press)The ever-smiling, ever-globe-trotting Jean-Michel Cazes, proprietor of Château Lynch-Bages, was to Bordeaux what Robert Mondavi was to Napa Valley: an emissary not just for his own estate but for an entire region.

This is not the first time I’ve made this declaration, but it’s worth noting again as winter approaches. That’s because Chenin is a white wine particularly well-suited to winter drinking. (Yes, even turkey—especially if it’s a Chenin from Vouvray.) A good Chenin can be made sparkling or still, dry or sweet or somewhere in the middle, though I tend to drink its dry versions the most. A top Chenin costs a fraction of what a top Chardonnay goes for—also worth considering when stocking up for holiday entertaining.

SWEET WINES are not popular, retailers have told me over and over again. A few weeks ago, one even pantomimed a customer running away. I like sweet wines, even if I don’t drink them as often as I do dry ones, and I usually need a reason or special occasion to try them. Two years ago, for instance, I wrote about pairing sweet wines with Thanksgiving pie. This time I decided to focus on sweet wines that are simply so good I would recommend them even to dry-wine diehards.
ALSO-RAN Why do so many wine drinkers equate red with serious and superior? Makers of great white wines beg to differ. Illustration: Cristina Spano“THE FIRST DUTY of wine is to be red,” the late, great English wine merchant and writer Harry Waugh reportedly stated, sometime before the turn of the last century. Recently I asked amateurs and professionals alike whether they esteem reds above whites, and most reported that they do consider red wines superior in at least some respect. I did, however, come away with some interesting insights into how we define greatness in wine.

This Tuscan Red-Wine Bargain Is Better Than Ever

WHY ARE less-acclaimed wines so often compared to their more-famous counterparts by means of a diminutive term? I’m thinking of Rosso di Montalcino, the red wine from Tuscany that’s often referred to as “baby Brunello.” Although Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino are made in the same place from the same grape, Brunello is considered one of the world’s best wines; Rosso, more of an also-ran. But is that fair, or even accurate? Talking with Brunello producers in the past several weeks, I found them just as focused on making a first-rate Rosso as a great Brunello. After tasting some 15 Rossos, I think many of those producers have succeeded in making Brunello-like wines that cost a lot less.

What Happens When You Stop at One Glass of Wine a Day?

SMALL DOSES One glass of wine per day means exactly that. According to government guidelines, you can’t save up your allotment and splurge on the third day. Illustration: Mitch BluntREADING THE MOST recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I found that women are advised to drink one glass of wine or less and men two glasses or less daily. Do many follow this advice?

ARE WE in the middle of rosé malaise? According to the retailers I talked with, the answer is yes…with an asterisk. Thanks to the rise of competing drinks (hard seltzer, canned cocktails), continuing Covid fallout and a boom in production all over the world that helped fuel a rosé glut, rosé sales are definitely less robust than in years past. Yet certain rosés are selling well. Indeed, some wines seem to be veritably malaise-proof.

A ‘Birth-Year’ Wine Is a Great Gift—Sometimes
  + stars: | 2023-05-04 | by ( Lettie Teague | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
If you’re thinking of bequeathing a bottle from the year a loved one was born, investigate what sort of vintage it was before you invest. Illustration: Nick LuHAVE YOU EVER tasted a wine made the year you were born? Some people will buy a wine for that reason alone. Purchasing “birth-year” wines for loved ones has long been a tradition among oenophiles. But I wonder if it is (still) a good idea, or a relic of an earlier era when wines weren’t styled to be consumed right away, as most are today.
5 Fantastic Sancerres You Can Actually Afford

WHAT WINE is recession-proof, fad-proof and seemingly immune to any bad press it gets? Sancerre, the white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley of France, has also been called overexposed, overproduced and overpriced. When restaurateurs price wines higher because they are sure to sell, it’s often called “the Sancerre tax.”
5 Big Wine Books to Buy Now and Use Forever
  + stars: | 2023-04-14 | by ( Lettie Teague | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
WRIT LARGE The substantial size of these wine books reflects the great breadth and depth of information inside. WHILE ONLINE wine advice may be only fleetingly relevant, and beginner wine guides are quickly outgrown, a Big Wine Book lives on and on. By Big Wine Book I don’t mean big in size alone. I’m talking about a reference work of ambition and uncommon usefulness—though the comprehensiveness of such books tends to make them physically quite large, as well. What distinguishes a Big Wine Book as both great and indispensable?
Kosher wines are made everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux. With Passover approaching, Lettie Teague found five bottles worthy of any celebration. “It seems like writing a pre-Passover article on kosher wine is a bit of an anachronism,” said the head winemaker of Golan Heights Winery, in an email. After all, reasoned Mr. Schoenfeld, kosher wines are consumed year-round. However, with Passover fast approaching and having just finished a tasting of 20 kosher wines, I would argue that now is actually a very good time to share with readers—especially those planning a Seder or wishing to bring a bottle to one—what I learned about the kosher wines available now.
A Skeptic’s Tour of New York City’s Natural Wine Bars
  + stars: | 2023-03-16 | by ( Lettie Teague | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
ON THE CASE Lettie Teague ventured into the natural wine bars of New York City with an open mind and a battery of questions for the bartenders. I’ve had some natural wines that were pleasant and many that were not. So I decided to taste the wines in their natural habitat: natural-wine bars. You can find natural-wine bars all over the world, and New York City—on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg, in particular—is a real stronghold. If I was going to get a clearer impression of natural wine and perhaps taste some better wines, these New York neighborhoods seemed like good places to start.
